Sophos Central Updates fail behind SonicWall Firewall

Sophos Central AV client gets flagged as a trojan when downloading updates to each client by SonicWall’s Firewalls. Below I will share how to create an exclusion list in your SonicWall to allow this important traffic through the Gatway AV feature.

Create address objects for the following domains/sub-domains assigned to the WAN zone:

  1. *
  2. *
  3. *
  4. *

Next create a group to house these address objects

Once that is complete you are ready to add this group to your Gateway Antivirus Exclusion list

Now that you have added this to the exclusion list your Sophos Central installs and update will run without error.

Office 365 Subscription issue

Account Notice
We’ve run into a problem with your Office 365 subscription, and we need your help to fix it.

The above error is caused by cached windows credentials from a previous user on the device. Microsoft tells me this is a bug that they are in the beginning stages of fixing. That being said here is how you fix it.

  1. Login as the effected user and sign out of one of your office applications. Then close all office applications.Signout
  2. Go into Windows Credentials manager using the control panel and remove all Generic credentials that are associated with office products.Credentials
  3. Open command prompt as an administrator and navigate to c:/ProgramFiles (x86)/Microsoft Office/office201Xcmd
  4. Run the following command cscript.exe ospp.vbs \dstatus this command will give you the last 5 digits of any active license on your computer.
  5. Check the CMD output making sure you get output saying <Product key uninstalled successful>
  6. Restart the computer and launch a windows app. Let the user login. This should fix the issue.

Repair Failed Disk in raid 5 array Synology RS815+

So your raid 5 has a failed disk. Don’t panic this is what we have been training for.

First of all good work, you chose the right raid type. In an environment that needs to have no down time as well as exceptional read write speeds raid 5 is the way to go. So without further ado let’s get your Synology back to fully functional.

  1. First things first pull out the disk drive that is causing the problems. The Synology is built to hot swap so go ahead on yank it out right away. Remember your working against the clock here to some extent and you want your system running on 4 drives for as little time as possible.
  2. Once you have removed the drive check with the manufacture of the HDD to see if its still under warranty.  All major manufactures have quick and easy way to check to see if your drive is still protected using the Serial Number listed on the drive. for example Western Digital.
  3. Now after your replacement drive arrives its time to plug it back in again don’t be bashful popping it in while the system is running is what its designed for. Once you have seated the new drive firmly in its place navigate to the Volume tab under Storage Manager
  4. Now with the volume selected choose Manage then select Repair and next. Finally select the disk that needs to be initialized and re added to the array then hit next. WARNING: you will receive a message at this point informing you that in order to initialize this disk for use in your array it will need to be erased. No problem since this is a black disk! Click OK then Apply.
  5. Excellent! your finished. Monitor the repair status to make sure it completes without error and your good. Remember if you now have an old corrupted HDD dispose of it responsibly by destroying it thoroughly.

Export PST file from office 365 using Outlook 2013

Creating a backup .pst file for terminated users is an important task for all Systems Administrators. Here is how i export mailboxes from office 365.

Prerequisite: First i change a users password to something i know using AD allowing time of at to sync said change to office 365 in the cloud.

  1. Login as that user and go to In the Control Panel create a new mail profile using the Mail Setup 32bit set radio button to Prompt for a profile to be used then hit ok and restart outlook.
  2. Now choose the profile you just created and hit ok. Wait for outlook to prepare the local mailbox.
  3. This is the tedious part. Wait until all messages have been downloaded to your computer. check lower right footer to see status of download. if it says all folders are up to date you are ready for the next step. Note: I like to click on every folder to make sure each folder says its up to date to insure no messages are missing.
  4. Once you are sure you have everything on your local computer export the PST file. go to File select Open & Export choose Import/Export then Export to a file and next. Click Outlook Data File(.pst). Finally make sure you have the Email address highlighted and hit next choose your export location and hit finish.
  5. Now make sure you store this in a secure location that backs up regularly for redundancy. You can now access a terminated users email address when need be.
